DIRECTIONS

OVERVIEW: Your CIVTEAM has established its capital city, and you are now faced with a number of important questions as you begin the process of building your economy.   Among the first questions: Should my civilization operate a slavery-based economy or not?  You be assigned one of the readings below to examine. Your purpose for reading is to answer this question: What are the potential incentives (benefits) and liabilities (risks) associated with slavery?

BEFORE YOU READ: Create a PRO-CON "T-Chart" on a piece of scrap paper.  You will use this chart to help you evaluate slavery by considering its advantages and drawbacks.

AS YOU READ: Record the advantages/benefits and problems/costs/risks associated with slavery on the PRO-CON "T-Chart."  Whenever you read something that makes a slave-based economy sound like something that could benefit your state, record the ideas and/or details on the PRO side of your chart.  Whenever you read something that suggests that slavery may cause problems for your state, record the ideas/details on the CON side of your chart.

AFTER YOU READ: You will share out the important details of your document.  Others in the room will share out the important details of their documents, too.  Add to your T-chart as others share the ideas and details from their documents.

CLOSURE: Write a "STATE DECLARATION ON SLAVERY" in which you make clear whether your civilization will or will not operate a slavery-based economy.  Explain your reasoning.

***IF YOU ARE WORKING ALONE (i.e. M.I.T. or Twilight School or Homebound), then you are responsible for examining all 6 documents.  Gathering ideas from all of the documents, create a comprehensive T-Chart that reveals the PROS and CONS of slavery-based economies.  Then write your "State Declaration on Slavery."
