OVERVIEW
Per your request, you will use your daily "Enrichment Time" at the end of class to design and execute an independent project.  Your project will focus on the history of a particular topic.

General plan:

  • Select a topic for exploration and write a research target that states your specific goal.
  • Develop a research plan with a set of deadlines that will keep you on track.
  • Research: Gather information from lots of different sources.
  • Organize the information.
  • Describe the product that you will create to showcase your learning.
  • Use the information to create your final product.
INSTRUCTION #1: Select a topic of interest and write a research target.
  1. Write your name and class period on the top line of a 3x5" index card (get from Mr. Prather).
  2. Under your name write the topic you want to investigate (ex: baseball, soul food, mythology).
  3. In the remaining space on the same side, write 5-7 questions that interest you about the topic.
  4. Turn the card over.  Thinking about your topic and questions, write a specific research prompt.
    • Example: Examine the impact of boxing on the black community in America since 1900.
    • Example: Examine the civilizations and contributions of 3 pre-modern African kingdoms.
    • Example: Examine the history of the Vietnam War and its impact on American society.
    • Example: Examine the role of music in the American Civil Rights Movement.
    • Example: Examine the history and significance of black male fashion since 1920.
    • Example: Examine the legacies of five unknown but significant 20th c. American women.
Here is a list of the research targets that students have already established:
  • Examine the history of the music group Jagged Edge, and evaluate the impact of its music on black and white America since 1997. [K. Spencer]
  • Examine how the Department of Justice's cocaine drug laws have impacted American society since the 1970s. [R. Sutton]
  • Examine the historical significance of cheerleading -- focusing on its role and impact in American society -- since its development. [M. Williams]
  • Examine the history of hip-hop dance as an art form, and trace the popularity of hip-hop dance over time in order to determine whether the art form is getting stronger or weaker. [J. Ward]

INSTRUCTION #2: Develop a visual structure for your research target.
  1. Work with Mr. Prather to transform your research target into a visual/graphic organizer.
  2. Example:
